General Guild FAQ
This section addresses some basic questions that applicants might have about the guild, and links to various other threads where you can find more detailed explanations about things. If your question isn't answered here, post in the Help Desk thread and we'll provide a (hopefully) helpful answer.
Q) What is Commonwealth?
A) Commonwealth is a World of Warcraft roleplaying guild. More specifically, it's a heavy RP guild for Alliance characters on the Shadow Council server.
Q) What is the guild theme/concept?
A) Commonwealth aims to be a general adventurer's guild for less-than-extraordinary adventurers. It's not for the clueless and inept, but it's not for characters who could hold their own against Arthas or Illidan, either. Think of the average traveling hero, who needs to accept various missions at each town he visits to afford meals, a few pints at the bar and a night's stay at the inn -- that's a typical Commonwealth member. For a more detailed explanation, please read our charter.
Q) How do I know if my character is a good fit for the guild?
A) There are two important factors here. Firstly, just how "uber" is your character? It's not just combat prowess that applies -- are you extraordinarily wealthy? Are you casually associated with powerful entities like dragons? Are you a famous noble? Are you an engineer whose creations bend the fabric of space-time? Obviously as an adventurer you're pretty talented in some ways, but if the scale goes up to "I'm amazing" on any particular trait, odds are you'll be denied entry into the guild. Secondly, your character must more or less match the moral and ethical alignment of the guild.
Q) What is the guild alignment?
A) Commonwealth is pretty much the definition of neutral good. Its members are not overly duty-bound, nor do they shun the laws of the Alliance lands. In general a Commonwealth member is altruistic to some degree and can cooperate with a wide variety of different people, but does not achieve his or her goals through means that most Alliance citizens would consider contemptible or unnecessary, even if the ends are positive. For some examples of off-limits IC behavior, see this thread.
Q) Can warlocks and death knights join?
A) The short answer is yes to warlocks on a case-by-case basis, though they'll have to abide by certain restrictions, and no to death knights. For a more detailed explanation, see this thread.
Q) How do I apply to join?
A) You must express in-character interest to a Functionary (guild officer) or the Prime Tinker (Lisa). You can do this either by sending in-game mail, or meeting the characters face to face. Following a bit of OOC chat in tells, we'll set you up with an in-character interview at a time and date that works for you. If your character seems a good fit, you'll be granted an introductory guild rank at the conclusion of the interview. A list of current guild officers can be found here.
Q) What are the guild ranks?
A) You can find an explanation of the rank titles here.
Q) Is guild chat IC or OOC?
A) Guild chat is fully in-character, carried out via gnomish buzzboxes that allow communication across large distances. Your character will be given one of these upon admission into the guild. You don't have to use it, but it's pretty handy when you need to contact someone who's very far away. Bracketed OOC speech in guild chat, such as linking of in-game items, should only happen when absolutely necessary. We have a separate OOC chat channel, so there's no need to use /g for out-of-character chatter.
Q) How do I join the OOC chat channel? What are the rules?
A) The name of the channel will be given to you when you express interest in joining the guild. It isn't posted on the website, else it'd be easy for griefers to join and cause trouble. (No, it's not the obvious name you'd expect.) The conduct rules are the same as for the website and general OOC interaction with members of the guild; you can find them here.
Q) Do you have guild meetings?
A) We do indeed! We currently hold our guild meetings every Sunday evening at 7:00pm server time, in Stormwind's Deeprun Tram station. This will likely remain our consistent meeting time, since it works reasonably well for most of the membership. Should there be any changes, however, they'll be posted in the events forum.
Q) Are the meetings required?
A) Guild meeting attendance is entirely optional, but if your schedule permits, it's helpful to attend them whenever you can. It's a good way to keep up to date on the general goings-on of the guild, and provides some RP interaction that you can count on every week.
Q) Are there penalties for inactivity? Can I be removed from the guild for it?
A) Not at all. Commonwealth aims to be a low-stress guild for players of all schedules, and we understand completely if you can't be online overly much. If you're planning to disappear for a long while, it might be good to let the officers know first, just so nobody worries about your extended absence. Even if you don't, however, your character will still be in the guild when you return.
Q) Why is there a turtle on your guild crest?
A) While not as popular as dragons, lions, eagles and so forth, the turtle is not without heraldic significance. Its armored shell signifies a strong defense, and it has long served as a literary metaphor for slow but certain progress. For the most part, though, it was the best idea that the guild founders had at the time, and after ordering a bunch of tabards with the design, they can't really afford to change it to something else.
